- On October 17, 1972 - the sacred name of Anna, and with Anna's profile on the flag, the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK) was launched, founded by Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MGR.

- AIADMK won 18 seats in General Elections, underscoring the maiden electoral victory in the Dindigul bye-elections earlier.
- First time DR MGR becomes the chief minister of Tamilnadu.
- In Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, the DMK was trounced. The AIADMK emerged victorious, winning 127 of the 195 seats it contested.

- In the succeeding General elections to the Legislative Assembly in 1980, MGR and his AIADMK was again victorious and came back to power.
- Puratchi Thalaivar becomes chief minister again – the success never fails.
- One of the greatest achievements of Dr MGR's rule was the introduction of Noon Day Meal called as "Nutritious Meal" for school children. A scheme, which ensured that no child went hungry or was kept away from school as his/her parents, could not afford a square meal a day.

- In Madurai West Marungapuri Assembly bye-election, the unified AIADMK won hands down.

- Indian National congress Leader Rajiv Gandhi Killed by a human bomb during his campaign
- It shows the culture of violence had gained roots in Tamilnadu under Karunanidhi
- Following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, the elections scheduled for May 24 were postponed to June 15.
- In the General Election the AIADMK-led front won a historic victory. And Puratchi Thalaivi J.Jayalalithaa became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

- The newspapers, which were supportive of Karunanidhi's vengeful politics, were also zealously engaged in spreading malicious gossip about Puratchi Thalaivi at his bidding. After thus doctoring the environment, he foisted false cases on Puratchi Thalaivi. She was arrested on December 7, 1996. She was imprisoned in Chennai Central Jail. And there she was subjected to physical and emotional torture.
- She was lodged in a cell in Chennai Central Jail, close to the stinking Cooum river with bandicoots, lizards and cockroaches freely running about. At the same time, in her absence, her house was virtually ransacked day and night for a fortnight by the DVAC officials at the behest of Karunanidhi. All sorts of defamatory canards and politically motivated news were spread by Karunanidhi and faithfully carried by daily newspapers.
- In the Local Body Elections in 1996, the AIADMK performed creditably. In the bye-election to Pudukottai, the public showed that they did not believe Karunanidhi's vengeful propaganda by ensuring the victory of the AIADMK.

- In the light of these developments, General Elections to the Lok Sabha the AIADMK led by Puratchi Thalaivi headed the Front of which the BJP, MDMK, PMK, TRC and Janata Party were the constituents.
- Out of the candidates set up in 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry by the Democratic Progressive Front led by Dr Puratchi Thalaivi, 30 won with ease. Of the 21 candidates who contested on behalf of the AIADMK, as many as 18 emerged victorious.
